And the Great Transformation of Chinese Culture in Axial Period
Abstract: A great transformation from theological type to secular type took place in Axial Period of Chinese culture. The transformation set up ‘mindology’ as humanistic tradition, which is now one of the precious resources for modernization. Nevertheless, it made us lost the individual spirits as ‘primary substance’, the consequences of which are contradictory to modernity. The great transformation had undergone three phases, the classical representation of which just was the conditions about the texts of the Book of Change as follows. Its start was the ideas in the Yi Classic (during the Western Zhou Dynasty), its development was the explanation to the milfoil-divination in the Zuo Commentary (during the Spring and Autumn Period), and its completion was the thoughts in the Yi Commentary (during the Warring States). Precisely because these above, the Book of Change became afterwards the leader of all the classics and the resource of all the behaviors.
